LGBTTQ Family Day Event a Success!
On February 15, 2010, the Around the Rainbow Project and the AIDS Committee of Ottawa hosted an afternoon of arts, crafts and baking for LGBTTQ families in Ottawa. The event was very well attended, reuniting old friends and providing an opportunity to make new ones. The children had a blast decorating candles, making cookies and playing games while parents got a chance to talk.
We would like to give a huge thank you to Frédérique Chabot and the rest of the AIDS Committee of Ottawa as well as the Snowblower Festival for helping to organize and participate in this event. Thanks also to Betty from the Ten Oaks Project for coming out and sharing resources. Last, but certainly note least, we would like to thank all the families who came - we loved spending time with you and will make sure there are plenty of future events like this one!
Watch Out, Toronto! Around the Rainbow Heads to the Rainbow Health Ontario Conference
On March 24-26, 2010, Around the Rainbow's Community Developer, Marnie Potter, will be heading to Toronto to sit on a panel for the first Rainbow Health Ontario Conference. The aim of Rainbow Health Ontario is to address the health and wellness issues of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) individuals and communities in Ontario.
This conference has drawn a wealth of participants and panelists who will speak on everything from emotional, mental, physical and spiritual health and wellness issues, to the current research around LGBT health, to current issues in public policy and activism, to effective education and training resources. Marnie will be sitting on the "Celebrating LGBTQ Families" panel on March 26, speaking about the challenges and successes of the Around the Rainbow Project throughout the last 5 years. She will be joined by Danielle Sutherland (co-chair of Project Acorn's Youth Advisory Committee) and an LGBTQ-identified parent; Kate Moore (executive director of the Ten Oaks Project) will be moderating the panel.
